INTRODUCTION

  • First sentence: Start with one broad sentence that hooks the reader and lets him or her know what your essay is going to be about.

  • Second Sentence: Short sentence that introduces title of work and author.

  • Third Sentence: Your thesis goes in this sentence. Do not include any other information, and make sure that your thesis is a concise, complete sentence.

BODY PARAGRAPHS

This consists of literary chunks that analyze quotes and how they apply to the thesis. Literary chunks are three to four sentences that contextualize, concise, and analyze a quote in a concise manner. For your Paper 2, your grandMAMA suggests that you have at least five literary chunks.

  • First sentence: Contextualize the quote. In one sentence, summarize the event(s) that occur prior to the quote used.

  • Second sentence: Introduce the quote here. Make sure that the quote is not the only thing in the sentence.

  • Third (and possibly fourth sentence): Analyze the quote in relation to the theme. Make sure that you are always talking directly about the quote.

 

For example: Hamlet sneaks up while Rosencrantz and Guildenstern sleep. Hamlet takes Claudius’ letter, goes behind the umbrella, and “Hamlet emerges again with a [different] letter, and replaces it, and retires, blowing out his lantern” (111). Unlike Rosencrantz and Guildenstern, Hamlet embodies the philosophy of existentialism because he understands that he has the choice to change his future and makes choices that ensure his survival. By changing the letter, Hamlet is changing his fate and killing Rosencrantz and Guildenstern, who represent the external forces that

CONCLUSION

In the conclusion, restate your thesis and write one or two sentences that expand your thesis to the real-world. Remember that the conclusion goes from specific to broad ideas.
